Description

Gents Rolex Oyster Cosmograph “Sigma Dial” in stainless steel Ref# 6265. On the original riveted stainless steel Oyster bracelet with a stainless steel deployant clasp dated 1970. Stainless steel engraved tachymeter bezel with raised acrylic crystal. The case diameter is 37 mm. Manual-wind movement with chronograph, and sub-seconds. This is an early model with the denotation of Oyster because of the addition of the screw-down pushers. Black dial with applied stick hour markers and white chronograph sub-dials. This watch is circa 1972. Very Good condition.

What is a Sigma dial “Daytona”?

This Rolex Cosmograph watch does not have the name Daytona printed on the dial. There are three lines of print in white under the crown. Rolex, the brand. Oyster, which is referring to the newly introduced screw-down crown and pushers. The word Cosmograph which is what Rolex called their chronograph teamed up with a tachymeter on the bezel. This watch pre-dates the Daytona Speedway affiliation.

Sigma dials are identified by the small printed “o” characters flanking the “T SWISS T” under the 6 on the dial. This designation indicated that the hands and the hour markers were made of gold. The Swiss Watch Trade Association implemented the use of these symbols to showcase the higher standards and values of Swiss timepieces and similar symbols can be found on other brand dials from this era. Hence the nickname “Sigma”. This dial is a subtle, yet important step in the history of one of the most iconic watch designs ever produced, and the watch is highly sought after by collectors.
