• Luster: Luster is a combination of surface brilliance and a deep seated glow. In a good quality pearl the luster should be bright not dull. A pearl that appears too white, dull, or chalky, indicates low quality.
• Surface: The cleaner the surface of the pearl, the more valuable it is. Cleanliness is dictated by the absence of spots bumps or cracks on the pearl's surface.
• Size: Pearls range in size (measured in millimeters) from less than 1mm to as large as 20mm for big South Sea Pearls. Size will often be the mitigating factor (with all other factors being equal) of the price of the pearl.
• Shape: The more perfectly round the pearl, the greater the value. Baroque pearls, which are assymetrical in shape, can still have good luster and often cost less than round pearls.
• Color: Pearls come in a variety of colors from rosé to black, and all depend on the wearer's preference, and complexion.
